EDITORIAL
The European automotive industry is going through an unprecedented transformation because of the short-term impact of the COVID-19 crisis, the perspective of a no-deal Brexit, as well as the long-term shift towards clean and digital mobility, and the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
While all these challenges strongly impact the automotive industry and the lives of the more than 14.6 million Europeans currently employed in the value chain, they also give the possibility to the executives of the sector to redefine the future of the industry and accelerate the transition towards renewable resources and a regenerative, or circular, economy.

Now, more than ever, the automotive industry must develop environmentally friendly and sustainability mobility. Although investments in vehicle technology, intelligent transport systems and cleaner production processes have permitted to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and improve safety, it is now evident that European collaborative approaches covering entire value chains are essential for matching economic growth with environmental improvements and improved social responsibility.

In this context of global economic instability and profound technological shifts, the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation funded project “BlackCycle” will play a key role for the future of the automotive industry by enabling a massive circular economy of end-of-life tyres at the European scale.

SUCCESS STORY
Launch of the BlackCycle project !

Officially launched in May 2020, the BlackCycle project involves 13 organisations in a unique European public-private partnership that will demonstrate the technical, environmental, and economic viability of world-first circular processes.
The consortium will develop specific solutions to produce sustainable raw materials for tyres: ELT (End of Life Tyre) collection and feedstock selection, pyrolysis optimisation, oil refining and valorisation, furnace process optimisation, and sustainable tyre performance assessment.

LATEST NEWS
Discover the BlackCycle Project on our new website !

The BlackCycle project aims at creating, developing, and optimising a full value chain form ELT feedstock to Secondary Raw Materials (SRMs), with no waste of resources in any part of the chain and a specific attention for the environmental impact. These SRMs will be used to develop new ranges of passenger car and truck tyres, which will be sold commercially in European and global markets. As a result, the BlackCycle value chain expects a lower carbon footprint, emitting 0.93 kg CO2/kg tyres less and a lower using of fossil resources, using 0.89 kg fossil/kg ELT less
(to be confirmed within the project).
By offering an economically and environmentally viable alternative, BlackCycle will reduce the export of end of life tyres. By relocating end-of-life tyre management and transformation within the EU, BlackCycle is expected to create sustainable jobs inside the EU.
